Forgotten Skillz offers hands-on workshops, outdoor experiences, and experiential education programs across Long Island. Our events explore the connections between nature, traditional skills, cultural history, craft, science, stewardship, and human ingenuity through direct participation and discovery.

 

Programs may take participants into the woods to learn fire-making, navigation, foraging, ecology, or wilderness skills; into the workshop to explore historic crafts and technologies; or into the past through activities inspired by the ways people have created, adapted, solved problems, and understood their world. Events are designed for a range of ages and experience levels, with opportunities for children, teens, adults, families, homeschool communities, and the general public.

Join us on September 12th from 10am to noon for a hands-on Coil Basket Weaving Workshop that will take you on a journey through history while teaching you a time-honored skill. Coil basket weaving is an ancient craft practiced by indigenous cultures across the globe, from the Native American tribes of the Southwestern United States, such as the Hopi and Navajo, to the Bedouins of North Africa, and indigenous groups in Central and South America. These beautifully crafted baskets were traditionally made using natural materials like grasses, reeds, and pine needles, and served a variety of purposes—from gathering food to storing goods.
During the workshop, we’ll begin with a brief exploration of the rich history and cultural significance of coil basket making. You’ll learn how different cultures perfected this method of weaving over thousands of years, adapting it to their environment and needs, and how it remains an important part of cultural heritage today.
Then, with expert guidance, you’ll get to craft your own small coil basket using modern materials, such as yarns and ropes, while applying the same techniques that have been passed down through generations.
This event is for both seasoned crafters and complete beginners. You’ll leave with a unique, handmade basket and a deeper appreciation for this ancient tradition.
Materials Provided: All necessary materials will be supplied.
