Forgotten Skillz offers hands-on workshops, outdoor experiences, and experiential education programs across Long Island. Our events explore the connections between nature, traditional skills, cultural history, craft, science, stewardship, and human ingenuity through direct participation and discovery.
Programs may take participants into the woods to learn fire-making, navigation, foraging, ecology, or wilderness skills; into the workshop to explore historic crafts and technologies; or into the past through activities inspired by the ways people have created, adapted, solved problems, and understood their world. Events are designed for a range of ages and experience levels, with opportunities for children, teens, adults, families, homeschool communities, and the general public.
Homeschool SkillCraft Lab Ages 11-14 (Patchogue)

SkillCraft Lab: Outdoor Homeschool Experience
SkillCraft Lab gives ages 11–14 opportunities to build practical capability through hands-on skills, problem-solving, teamwork, and real-world challenges. Each session uses a different topic to engage both hands and minds while developing confidence, judgment, adaptability, and the ability to work effectively with others.
For this session, participants will explore Wilderness Survival Basics. They will learn how to assess an unexpected situation, identify immediate priorities, evaluate useful tools and resources, and practice foundational outdoor skills in a safe, active setting. The emphasis is on calm thinking, sound decisions, cooperation, and healthy risk-taking—not simply memorizing survival techniques.
The SkillCraft workshops also serve as Module 1 of the Praxis Program, introducing a broader experiential series that connects practical skills with science and engineering literacy, leadership skills, personal development, and applied challenges.

Every Forgotten Skillz event is built around learning by doing. Whether you are trying something for the first time or building on skills you already have, our programs invite you to experiment, ask questions, work with real materials, and discover new ways of looking at the natural and human world.
