Forgotten Skillz offers hands-on workshops, outdoor experiences, and experiential education programs across Long Island. Our events explore the connections between nature, traditional skills, cultural history, craft, science, stewardship, and human ingenuity through direct participation and discovery.
Programs may take participants into the woods to learn fire-making, navigation, foraging, ecology, or wilderness skills; into the workshop to explore historic crafts and technologies; or into the past through activities inspired by the ways people have created, adapted, solved problems, and understood their world. Events are designed for a range of ages and experience levels, with opportunities for children, teens, adults, families, homeschool communities, and the general public.
Homeschool SkillCraft Lab Ages 7-11 (Patchogue)
SkillCraft Lab: Outdoor Homeschool Experience
SkillCraft Lab is an ongoing, 90-minute outdoor class for homeschoolers ages 7–11, where children build practical skills, confidence, curiosity, and problem-solving ability through meaningful, hands-on experiences. Sessions may include nature observation, cordage and knots, shelter basics, fire safety, simple tool use, natural-material projects, nature-based projects, teamwork, and creative challenges.
Each week invites students to slow down, notice opportunities for exploration, ask better questions, and learn by doing. Along the way, they will strengthen real-world thinking, cooperation, leadership, and their connection to the natural world.
Classes meet Wednesdays from 11:00 AM–12:30 PM, beginning September 9, outdoors in Patchogue. We meet rain or shine, so participants should bring weather-appropriate clothing, sturdy shoes, water, and curiosity. Parents are welcome and encouraged to attend and participate. The initial meet-up will be at the Shorefront Park band shell. Exact meeting details will be provided after registration.
