Forgotten Skillz offers hands-on workshops, outdoor experiences, and experiential education programs across Long Island. Our events explore the connections between nature, traditional skills, cultural history, craft, science, stewardship, and human ingenuity through direct participation and discovery.
Programs may take participants into the woods to learn fire-making, navigation, foraging, ecology, or wilderness skills; into the workshop to explore historic crafts and technologies; or into the past through activities inspired by the ways people have created, adapted, solved problems, and understood their world. Events are designed for a range of ages and experience levels, with opportunities for children, teens, adults, families, homeschool communities, and the general public.
ScribeCraft I: Ink & Pen (Middle Island)

ScribeCraft I: Ink & Pen introduces participants to the handmade tools and natural materials that shaped the early history of writing. Through ink-making, pen preparation, and guided experimentation, participants explore writing as a blend of art, science, communication, and craft.
This hands-on workshop introduces natural inks made from ingredients such as charcoal, berries, iron, and vinegar, along with early-style writing tools made from materials such as reeds or feathers. Participants will shape or prepare a writing tool, experiment with ink, and test their work through writing, mark-making, or simple calligraphic expression.
As the first workshop in the ScribeCraft core series, Ink & Pen opens a larger exploration of the written word, including the tools, surfaces, formats, and binding traditions that helped people record ideas, preserve knowledge, and share stories across generations.
Participants will leave with a handmade writing tool, natural ink, and a sample of their own writing or artistic expression.

Whether you are trying something for the first time or building on skills you already have, our programs invite you to experiment, ask questions, work with real materials, and discover new ways of looking at the natural and human world.
