Forgotten Skillz offers hands-on workshops, outdoor experiences, and experiential education programs across Long Island. Our events explore the connections between nature, traditional skills, cultural history, craft, science, stewardship, and human ingenuity through direct participation and discovery.

Programs may take participants into the woods to learn fire-making, navigation, foraging, ecology, or wilderness skills; into the workshop to explore historic crafts and technologies; or into the past through activities inspired by the ways people have created, adapted, solved problems, and understood their world. Events are designed for a range of ages and experience levels, with opportunities for children, teens, adults, families, homeschool communities, and the general public.

The Living Night: A Guided Encounter with Darkness

October 26 @ 18:00 - 20:00
The Living Night Night hike on Long Island Forgotten Skillz 1 png

October 26th, 2026 | 6:00pm | Ages 12 to Adult | Sands Point Preserve

The trail does not disappear after sunset. It certainly does change.

The Living Night hike invites participants into a slower, more sensory experience of the land as daylight fades and the evening landscape begins to reveal itself. Through guided observation, quiet moments, simple activities, and shared discovery, we will explore what happens when we stop relying on speed and brightness and begin noticing sound, shadow, texture, sky, and movement.

This Forgotten Skillz experience blends nature education, sensory awareness, basic navigation, storytelling, and ecological reflection. Participants may explore how night vision works, how sound shapes our awareness of place, how people have used the night sky for stories and direction, and how nocturnal animals depend on darkness as part of their habitat.

The night is alive with movement, sound, story, and hidden relationships. Darkness is not empty space; it is part of the ecosystem; it is a habitat. As we move through the trail together, we will consider how artificial light changes the lives of insects, birds, bats, plants, and people, and how protecting darkness can be part of protecting nature.

This is a gentle, experience-based hike with frequent stops. It is designed for people who enjoy nature, curiosity, community, and the chance to experience a familiar landscape in an unfamiliar way.

Meet-up begins at 6pm.  We kick off promptly at 6:30.
