Forgotten Skillz offers hands-on workshops, outdoor experiences, and experiential education programs across Long Island. Our events explore the connections between nature, traditional skills, cultural history, craft, science, stewardship, and human ingenuity through direct participation and discovery.

 

Programs may take participants into the woods to learn fire-making, navigation, foraging, ecology, or wilderness skills; into the workshop to explore historic crafts and technologies; or into the past through activities inspired by the ways people have created, adapted, solved problems, and understood their world. Events are designed for a range of ages and experience levels, with opportunities for children, teens, adults, families, homeschool communities, and the general public.

Wilderness Survival Series: Modern Firecraft (Sands Point)

In this dynamic and engaging workshop, participants will learn how to quickly and safely create fire using modern tools such as ferro rods, flint and steel, and prepared tinder materials. While these methods feel effortless compared to friction fire, their roots trace back to the same ingenuity that sparked human progress thousands of years ago.

Together, we’ll explore not only how to ignite fire efficiently, but how to prepare for the next one — learning ancient techniques for carrying and protecting flame across distance, just as early travelers and storytellers once did. Through hands-on practice, you’ll build different styles of fire lays for cooking and warmth, understand fire behavior in various weather conditions, and reflect on how fire continues to connect people across cultures, generations, and technologies.

This class celebrates both modern convenience and the deep heritage of skill and respect that made it possible — a perfect bridge between Primitive Firecraft and the world we live in today.
