Bring Experiential Education to Life
Forgotten Skillz brings hands-on experiential learning to schools, libraries, museums, parks, homeschool communities, organizations, and other groups across Long Island. Our programs explore nature, traditional skills, cultural history, craft, science, stewardship, and human ingenuity through direct experience.
Participants might investigate how people solved practical problems in the past, work with natural or traditional materials, explore an ecosystem, experiment with an early technology, develop an outdoor skill, or tackle a collaborative challenge. The subject changes from workshop to workshop, but the approach remains the same: learn by doing, questioning, experimenting, and discovering.
Programs can stand alone as memorable workshops or support larger educational goals, curriculum themes, community programming, team development, and ongoing enrichment. We can adapt many experiences for different ages, group sizes, settings, and objectives.
Who We Work With
Libraries & Community Organizations: Bring something different to your calendar with participatory programs built around nature, history, science, traditional skills, craft, and discovery. Forgotten Skillz workshops are designed to engage participants directly rather than simply asking them to sit and listen.
Schools & Educators: Add experiential learning to classroom subjects through programs that connect students with science, history, engineering, ecology, culture, literature, and practical problem-solving. Workshops can be adapted to grade level, curriculum goals, and New York State learning standards where appropriate.
Museums, Parks & Nature Centers: Connect people more deeply with history, landscape, ecology, and material culture through demonstrations, field experiences, and hands-on programs designed around your site, mission, or interpretive themes.
Homeschool Groups: Create ongoing enrichment or individual experiences that give learners opportunities to investigate, make, experiment, collaborate, and apply ideas outside a conventional classroom setting.
Corporate, Professional & Team Groups: Develop communication, adaptability, resourcefulness, leadership, and collaboration through unusual hands-on challenges and shared experiences.
Social Groups & Adult Learners: Explore a new skill, subject, or craft together through approachable programs built for curious beginners as well as participants looking to deepen an existing interest.
Forgotten Skillz Workshops
Forgotten Skillz programs are organized around a growing collection of themes, series, and learning experiences. Most workshops can be adapted for different ages, group sizes, settings, and goals, and we regularly develop new programs in response to the interests of our partners.

Wilderness Survival Series – Explore practical outdoor skills, human adaptation, and our relationship with the natural environment through fire, water, shelter, navigation, cordage, and other hands-on challenges.
ScribeCraft Series – Explore the history and technology of the written word through the materials, tools, and techniques people have used to record and communicate ideas.
Stewardship Series – Investigate our relationship with the land through observation, ecology, responsible use, environmental awareness, and practical action.
WeaveCraft Series – Discover how natural and traditional materials can be transformed into useful structures through weaving, binding, basketry, cordage, and related fiber technologies.
HearthCraft Series – Explore shelter, structure, domestic technology, and the ways people have created functional spaces using available materials and practical design.
The Proving Grounds Series – Take on hands-on challenges involving traditional tools, games, techniques, and tests of accuracy, coordination, strength, strategy, and control.
Literature Immersion – Step beyond the page through experiences designed around the settings, skills, technologies, environments, and challenges found within literature. Originally developed in partnership with Sands Point Preserve for middle and high school students, Literature Immersion can also be adapted for adult book groups and other readers.
Praxis – An ongoing experiential learning program for ages 7-11 and 11–14 that connects practical skills, STEAM investigation, leadership and personal development, and collaborative challenges. Praxis can be hosted as a complete multi-part program or adapted around the needs of a homeschool group, school, library, or other learning community.
