SkillCraft Explorers gives ages 7–11 opportunities to learn through doing, making, experimenting, and exploring the world around them. Drawing from the practical skills, traditional knowledge, nature literacy, cultural history, and hands-on learning of Forgotten Skillz, each session gives participants something real to investigate, practice, create, or accomplish.

Rather than simply hearing about how people make, build, navigate, solve problems, or work with the natural world, Explorers get involved directly. They may work with tools and materials, investigate nature, try traditional crafts, explore historical technologies, solve practical problems, or discover the science hidden inside everyday skills.

What Is SkillCraft?

SkillCraft explores the practical knowledge people have developed to understand, work with, and adapt to the world around them. Topics can range from traditional crafts and outdoor skills to tools, materials, nature, cultural technologies, human ingenuity, and the many ways people have solved problems across time.

The specific activity changes from session to session, but the goal remains the same: give young people meaningful opportunities to become more curious, capable, resourceful, and confident through direct experience.

Built for Exploration

SkillCraft Explorers is designed so that individual sessions can stand on their own. Families can choose the topics and dates that interest them, attend regularly, or join when their schedule allows.

Because every session offers a different experience, returning Explorers continue encountering new skills, questions, materials, challenges, and ways of looking at the world.

Parents Are Welcome on the Adventure

Parents and caregivers are always welcome to stay, explore, and participate alongside their children. While adult participation is never required, younger Explorers in particular may feel more comfortable and confident tackling new experiences with a familiar grown-up nearby. Joining in can also turn the session into a shared experience—giving families a chance to discover, learn, and try something new together.

For Homeschool Families & Beyond

The flexible, experiential format makes SkillCraft Explorers especially well suited to homeschool families looking for hands-on enrichment beyond books and worksheets. The program is also designed to work naturally in libraries, community programs, camps, schools, youth organizations, and other settings where young people can learn through active participation.
