Exploring Improvised Tool-Building for Survival Enthusiasts

Survival isn’t just about enduring the wild—it’s about thriving in it. Join us for the next engaging session in the Wilderness Survival Workshop Series at the Center for Environmental Education and Discovery (CEED) in Brookhaven: Survival Tool-Making. In this hands-on workshop, you’ll explore the art of crafting simple yet effective tools using natural resources and minimal equipment.

Led by experienced survival instructors Eric Powers and Mike Evans, this session will empower you with practical skills that make wilderness living easier, safer, and more enjoyable. Whether you’re a curious beginner or a seasoned outdoor enthusiast, you’ll walk away with a deeper understanding of how creativity and resourcefulness can turn nature into a toolkit.

What You’ll Learn:

  • The Role of Tools in Survival: Discover how improvised tools can simplify tasks like shelter construction, fire-starting, food preparation, and gear repair while boosting efficiency and morale.
  • Hands-On Crafting: Get practical, hands-on experience crafting a variety of useful tools using natural materials like wood, stone, and plant fibers, paired with everyday survival gear.
  • Tool Design and Use: Learn how to shape, sharpen, and adapt materials to create tools like digging sticks, fire aids, mallets, and more—solutions you can rely on when modern tools aren’t available.
  • Your Take-Home Creation: Craft one special tool to bring home with you—a practical and personal reminder of your growing skills and ingenuity.

Get Your Hands Dirty

This workshop is all about doing. Bring your work gloves and survival knife (loaners available), roll up your sleeves, and transform raw materials into invaluable assets with your own two hands. You’ll leave with newfound confidence in your ability to adapt and innovate in the wild.
