At Forgotten Skillz, we host a diverse array of hands-on workshops and events designed to revive and teach essential skills from the past that are incredibly relevant to modern life. Our events range from wilderness survival techniques, like fire-making and foraging, to traditional crafts such as basket weaving, soap making, and leatherworking. We believe that understanding and practicing these time-honored skills can empower individuals to lead more self-sufficient and sustainable lives, fostering a deeper connection with nature and our heritage.

(Tentative) 24-Hour Survival Challenge at CEED (Brookhaven)

October 11, 2025 @ 12:00 - October 12, 2025 @ 12:00

Spend 24 hours in CEED’s fields, forests, and rivers with CEED Wildlife Biologist, Ranger Eric Powers, and Forgotten Skillz founder, Mike Evans, to learn about survival techniques in the wild in a number of active scenarios. This event runs from noon on Saturday, October 11th to noon on Sunday, October 12th.  You’ll learn essential skills to build shelter, make fire, purify water, cook – and have fun in a new community of fellow survivors!  If you have attended our survival workshop series then this will give you a chance to practice and hone your skills.  But, if this is your first time, then don’t worry!  We will guide you through every step of the adventure. This 24-hour Survival Challenge is geared for adults, but children 15+ years old are welcome with an adult.

(You can still participate if you haven’t taken previous workshops as we will recap previous skills)

Recent events, like the devastating storms that struck the north shore of Long Island, highlight the need for survival skills.  Looking at Hurricane Helene’s widespread impact in the Southeast, and even the port strikes disrupting supply chains, this need expands beyond just wilderness adventures. It’s easy to think of survival training as something only for the backcountry.  The reality is that modern-day challenges like extreme weather, power outages, and supply chain breakdowns can leave us vulnerable.  This is true even in our suburban or urban environments.

Imagine being without power for days or finding grocery store shelves empty due to delayed shipments. Having the knowledge to purify water, build a shelter, or start a fire could mean the difference between discomfort and security. These skills aren’t just about thriving in the wilderness. They are about being prepared for any unexpected challenge that life may throw your way. Our 24-hour survival challenge will help you build a foundation that can be applied in real-world emergency scenarios.  Gain the confidence to adapt and overcome, no matter the situation.
