At Forgotten Skillz, we host a diverse array of hands-on workshops and events designed to revive and teach essential skills from the past that are incredibly relevant to modern life. Our events range from wilderness survival techniques, like fire-making and foraging, to traditional crafts such as basket weaving, soap making, and leatherworking. We believe that understanding and practicing these time-honored skills can empower individuals to lead more self-sufficient and sustainable lives, fostering a deeper connection with nature and our heritage.
Join us for a Patchogue Possum Walk — a relaxed, curiosity-led exploration of the living shoreline and nearby forested paths at Shorefront Park in Patchogue.
This isn’t a tour. It’s not a hike. It’s an invitation to notice.
We call it a Possum Walk because, like the humble opossum, we move slowly, stay curious, and make the most of what others might overlook. Opossums don’t rush—they adapt, observe, and thrive by being present and resourceful. This walk is a chance to practice that same mindset: noticing instead of conquering, learning instead of labeling, and finding value in the quiet things we usually pass by.
We’ll walk slowly, pause often, and let the world show itself to us. Animal tracks, edible plants, fish in the shallows, handmade shelter materials, survival resources, subtle signs of change — what we find depends on the season, the tide, and the group’s questions.
Perfect for families, nature lovers, unschoolers, lifelong learners, or anyone who wants to slow down and reconnect with the land.
We’ll chat about ancestral skills, environmental awareness, and how we can build a more sustainable mindset — all in a friendly, low-key way. Bring your kids, bring your questions, and bring your inner possum!
No registration is needed. Meet up by the Band Shell at Shorefront Park.
Whether you’re a seasoned outdoor enthusiast, a curious beginner, or someone interested in sustainable living, our events provide a supportive community and expert instruction to help you acquire and refine these invaluable skills. Join us at our next event to embark on a journey of learning, discovery, and self-reliance, and see how the past can enrich your present and future.
